The average UPI payment is ₹1,217 — and shrinking.

India made 24.51 billion UPI payments in August 2026, worth ₹29.82 lakh crore. Divide one by the other and the typical payment is a third smaller than it was six years ago. UPI didn't grow by getting bigger. It grew by getting into the small stuff.

UPI carried 87.1% of all digital payment transactions in India in August 2026 — and just 10.1% of the rupees. UPI is how India pays for daily life. The big money still moves on NEFT, RTGS and IMPS.

If you're salaried

Nothing changes at your end: sending money to people stays free, and the ministry says merchants may not pass the fee on to you. The quieter lesson is in the ₹1,217 — the payments that grew fastest are the small, frequent ones that rarely show up in a mental budget.

If you're a founder

If customers pay you above ₹2,000 by UPI, those collections now carry 0.4% — ₹40 on a ₹10,000 invoice, never more than ₹300. Below ₹2,000, or if you take under ₹1 lakh a month on a QR as a small merchant, it stays zero.

If you set budgets

UPI is 87% of transactions but 10% of value, so a UPI fee line hits high-ticket merchant collections, not volume. Map your inflows by ticket size before assuming a cost: essential sectors pay a flat ₹5, capital-market payments 0.02%.

Sources: Reserve Bank of India, Payment System Indicators – August 2026 (UPI, cards, wallets, IMPS, NEFT, ATM, QR and PoS rows; data provisional), with earlier August figures from the RBI’s August 2021–2025 editions of the same release. Ministry of Finance, “UPI Continues to Remain Free for Peer to Peer Transactions and 96% of Merchant Transactions”, PIB, 15 September 2026. NPCI’s own August 2026 totals (24.51 bn transactions, ₹29.82 lakh crore) match the RBI figures.

Estimates & calculations: Average ticket sizes are CapitalVia calculations (total value ÷ total volume) from the RBI tables — the RBI does not publish them directly. Growth multiples, shares (87.1%, 10.1%), the daily average (volume ÷ 31 days) and the QR-to-PoS comparison are likewise calculated from those tables. The 70% person-to-person share and the ~96% / ~4% merchant split are the Finance Ministry’s own figures; the ministry does not state which period they cover. An average hides a wide spread: many UPI payments are far below ₹1,217 and some far above it.

Note: “ATM cash withdrawal” is not a digital payment; it is shown only for scale. Card figures at a shop are PoS transactions; “online & other” is the RBI’s “Others” category for credit cards.
