In today’s busy life, people are spending most of their time sitting in front of computers and not getting involved in much physical activity. Think about it – when was the last time you indulged in a sport like soccer or cricket? When was the last time you went on a bicycle ride? Does your typical work schedule include sitting in the same position for a long time? If yes, then your health is at risk.
An unhealthy lifestyle coupled with lack of adequate physical activity leads to various health issues like hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, atherosclerosis, postural disorders, anxiety, stress, depression, etc. We cannot always give time constraint as an excuse for not ensuring physical activity in our day to day life. But how do we balance physical and mental fitness with our daily regime? It’s simple. Chair Yoga.
“The most important pieces of equipment you need for doing yoga are your body and your mind.” Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done sitting on a chair or standing on the ground while using the chair for support. This is why Chair Yoga is gaining popularity in most workplaces. It does not require a lot of time and allows people to experience some physical activity which breaks the long period of idle sitting. If you do it on a regular basis, you will get relief from that annoying back pain and muscle stiffness that is probably the most common problem shared by people who have a desk job.
Urging employees to invest in their body, mind and soul, CapitalVia Global Research Ltd on Friday celebrated International World Yoga Day by hosting a yoga session for its employees in the office premises. It was an amazing experience and a wonderful way to start the day. Certified trainers from Rhythmic Power Yoga Shiksha Samiti impressed upon CVians the importance of devoting time in their health and well-being. The session began with a brief introduction of International Day of Yoga and neck stretching exercises.
This was followed by the focusing on shoulder region with rotation activities to make shoulders more flexible. The next focus area was the back. Employees stretched their backs to prevent any stiffness due to the continuous sitting posture. This was followed by some hip rotation to bring in flexibility in the lower part of spinal cord.
“The aim was to activate and functionalize the entire backbone starting from the neck to shoulders region, lower back and hips. However, this needs to be practiced for all 364 days a year, since one day will not make much of a difference,” Deepak Dasondiya said.
Thereafter ‘Anulom-Vilom Pranayam’ was practiced to activate and relax the mind – by controlling emotions, anger and subsequently many health related issues such as blood pressure and anxiety.
CVians then learnt one of the many paths to awaken their sixth sense which was rightly termed as ‘a representative of soul’ by yoga trainer Deepak Dasondiya. ‘Bhambhri Pranayam’ was practiced as everyone closed their eyes and ears and let out a humming sound resulting in a light headedness and a renewed freshness for taking on the challenges of the new day.
Ruchi Arora, Vashu Joshi, Pratibha Gupta, Malti Yadav, Radha Kushwaha and Anand Soni guided CVians during the entire session by demonstration across the floor at different points. CVians participated with much energy and enthusiasm in the session.
The session was concluded with team members sharing their experience with Chair Yoga. To many, this was a completely new experience and they felt re-energized after their first session. The key takeaway from this session was to practice this on a daily basis, even if the session lasts for 15-20 mins a day. Amit Pundlik, management intern (marketing), said, “Some of my friends had told me about Yoga and its benefits but I never took it seriously. But having experienced it myself today, I am definitely going to include this in my schedule. I have also suggested that my team should practice this every day”.
One should not only make financial investments, but also invest in health. Without a healthy mind and body, it would be quite challenging to live a happy life and fulfil all dreams. It’s about time that people start investing time and efforts towards living a healthy life. After all, we have just one life. Let’s make the most of it.
