RBI household survey · September 2026

Official urban inflation is 4.9%. Urban India feels 8.4%.

The RBI asked 5,987 households in 19 cities what prices are doing. Their answer is far above the official rate — and their guess for next year is higher still.

Why the felt number matters

1

For salaried employees

Raises get judged against the inflation people feel, not the CPI print. If your basket feels like 8–10%, a raise near the official rate will feel like standing still. Track your own spending to know your real number.

2

For founders

Your team may anchor appraisal talks nearer 10% than 5%. Customers primed for higher prices may also accept a price revision more readily — but they notice every one.

3

For business leaders

The RBI tracks these expectations because they can feed into wage demands and pricing. Rising expectations for five straight rounds is a signal worth putting in the planning deck.

Notes & estimates

  • All household figures are survey estimates (medians of a sample), not measured prices; each carries a standard error published by the RBI. The financial-sector employee figures have the widest error (±~1 point).
  • The comparison is not like-for-like: the survey covers 19 large cities; urban CPI covers all urban India. The all-India combined CPI rate was 5.54%.
  • “3.5 points” and “1.7×” are our arithmetic: 8.4 − 4.88 = 3.52; 8.4 ÷ 4.88 = 1.72. The RBI’s own round-on-round changes (+60, +70 and +60 bps) were re-checked against its Table 3 and match.
  • “Employees outside finance” is our plain-English label for the RBI’s “other employees” group. Survey views are respondents’ own and not necessarily the RBI’s.
